Black 'n' Grey

well, i can tell you what happened
try not to laugh but
you're gonna lose it, you're gonna love this part
if life has moved a little faster than you
you're gonna lose it, you're gonna love this part
if you're short on cash
if you're quick to ask
if you live too fast
if you don't look back
if all you have to say is done in black and grey
prefer the night to day
if you live that way then
you're gonna lose it, you're gonna love this part
i'm talking to my peeps
all the fringe and freaks
all the taboo geeks
all the type can't sleep
the same ones like me
the 5150s
patrons of the sleazy speak easys
you're gonna lose it, you're gonna love this part
'cause it's the chorus, how could you not?
well if you're 82z
and you were born to lose
if you can shoot the shit like you was lenny bruce...
you're gonna lose it, you're gonna love this part

Two of These

the american schoolyard
where i be face down by the monkey bars
the bullies come from north, south, east and west
they want what you got and they get in your face right now
i say "you're getting better
your lip don't even quiver
when you try to look down in my eyes
must've been up all night just trying to get it right
thinking of what you were gonna say to me right now"
'cause you're freshman, i'm rodman
and if you're king then i'm goddamned
'cause i've got two of these and ten of yas'
and i like my odds, man
give 'em the boot!
i've seen your type before
everyday when i get home from school
'cept he's a little bit bigger and he's a whole lot meaner
how you think these fists get ugly
and this face stay so pretty?
well fuck all that talk, tighten up since yous a warrior
now you wanna be down to earth?
well that's the best place for ya
look over your shoulder cuz it weren't just paranoia
that's me
plug in the xlr and give yourself a purpose
cuz a hundred watts of tube turn those serpents into servants
promise ya man, it's easier to breathe above the surface

I-5 Exit

you'd better go
because this bus waits for no one
and it's starting to snow and god only knows
how traffic is gonna be along the way
you used to say
you'd rather die than be away
so much has changed
because you're moving on up to seattle
and you say you'll write but i know better
missin' ya
take my favorite shirt
you always liked it more than i did
for what it's worth
it'll give me a reason to come and see you
and i'll never do it like this again
missin' ya

Simple Like That
03:29
|
|||
a halftime shuffle and a four/four roll
why can't it be simple like that?
just you and me and the cigarette glow
and singing sha-la-la-la-la-la
on a graffitied wall with arcata below
why can't it be simple like that?
a song and a wink and your dress and a drink
why can't it be simple like that?
lions and lambs and toucans and crabs
singing sha-la-la-la-la-la
the birds and the bees and the thoughts of trees
why can't it be simple like that?
because all i want to know
is how many ways can i say that i love you today?
a trip in the truck and your breath on my neck
why can't it be simple like that?
a one and a two and a three, here we go
singing sha-la-la-la-la-la
and the moon and the stars and all that cool stuff
why can't it be simple like that?
can't decide what to wear so we wear no clothes
why can't it be simple like that?
we don't care who sees and we don't care who knows
'cause we're singing sha-la-la-la-la-la
and counting the crickets and guessing the temp
why can't it be simple like that?
a halftime shuffle and a four four roll
why can't it be simple like that?

Ancient History
04:28
|
|||
well, there was a house madame
'do whatever it took
to make it out of the whorehouse
so she got a rich husband and she made damn sure
to keep a watchful eye on his bank account
one day they went driving and he didn't come back
she said he'd died from a snake attack
but we never saw his body and we never saw her cry
couldn't help but make a man ask why, you know
well, word spread quickly as it do in these parts
got us a group of boys and we went on out
to the old man's manor on the edge of town
just to have a little look around
but we didn't find nothing and we saw no sign
of foul play of any kind
so we gave her our apologies and our full trust
in the end that same snake bit each of us
and if anybody asked too much
she'd just give their thigh a little touch and say "baby
you don't have to know about that right now
it's all one big mystery
besides that's ancient history to me"
probably weren't her first and it sure weren't the last
to understand her one must consider her past
at the age of twenty-three she decided to dance
out of convenience and circumstance
but one night one of the guys got out of line
took advantage of her like a drunken swine
so she had to dig a hole after she'd reached for the knife
and subsequently had taken his life, for sure
well, she opened a boutique down in new orleans
but her nights were still plagued with bad dreams
and her thoughts had all left her to hover above
images of bodies and blood
and she couldn't shake it off and she didn't even try
fever rose as the months went by
and one by one a gentleman would disappear
and no one would ever hear from them again, you know
well, it takes one to know one
at least that's what they say
and just as said, one would come one day
he had charcoal eyes and sharpened teeth
aces and knives hidden up his sleeve
he had a black leather belt he used as a garrote
to wrap around his victim's throat
in a different time and place he might've taken her life
on this day he took her as his wife, for sure
and if anyone messes with you girl
i'm gonna give 'em the ol' one two and what for
and that's what i've got tattooed across my arm
cause it only makes sense to me
unholy matrimony, you and me

how you walk
how you move
how you sit down and listen
it's downright christian
and i still love you
how we speak
how we dance
without any shoes on
with the waves and the sand
and i still love you
sarah, i'm sorry
well, lemme try and explain what i mean
sarah, i'm sorry
but i hope you still see me at night in your sleep
and i'm not mad
'cause i know
that whoever he is
well, he must be a good one
'cause you've got good taste
but i won't stick around
i'll be right over here on the other side of town
far away but i still love you bug
as of now, as of tonight
you're the best goddamn thing that's ever happened in my life
and i know i'm stronger for knowing you
as of now, as of tonight
well, i don't want to admit it
but i i think i just did it and you...
and your face and your smile
it felt like i was finally home
after years and lifetimes far away on some distant shore
but I know
now I've learned
that the prettiest words that've ever been spoke are
"what might've been
isn't it pretty to think so?"

Bonnie Baby
03:15
|

well, the heat was strong and the day was long
but you stayed right there
when the people would spit upon my face
well, you brought me water
well, i looked on down into the crowd
saw you, the only one crying while i was dying
well, they got me good but they never caught up to you
they had no idea and i ain't one for telling
someone cut the rope and i fell flat on my feet
i was already running
in the panic of the moment i ran on over to you
you had the car waiting and your breath was baited
well, the two of us scattered all cloak and dagger
unto the county line
and there was a great silence that followed the violence
when i got blown to hell
but it's just as well
don't you go getting weak on me she said
oh please for christ's sake don't leave me
don't you go getting weak on my she said
but i was already dead
think of a good song
don't look too long at me rotting in the sun
take it out of my hand and point it at them
make sure your hand is steady and the car is ready
take this bag of money all covered in blood from me
and turn around and don't look back
spend it well
i'll be in hell with a seat saved just for you my bonnie baby
